Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the Mount Everest and the Three Passes Trek?

The Mount Everest and the Three Passes Trek is a challenging and exhilarating adventure that takes trekkers through some of the most remote and rugged parts of the Khumbu region. This trek offers an opportunity to cross three high-altitude passes—Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La—each providing breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and other Himalayan giants. Along with the majestic scenery, the trek also offers a deep dive into the culture of the Sherpa people, with visits to ancient monasteries and traditional villages. It is a more demanding route than the classic Everest Base Camp trek, designed for seasoned trekkers seeking an unforgettable Himalayan experience.

  • How difficult is the Mount Everest and the Three Passes Trek?

The Three Passes Trek is considered one of the most challenging trekking routes in Nepal. It involves significant altitude gains, high-altitude passes, and rugged terrain. Each of the three passes—Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La—requires trekkers to navigate steep ascents and descents, with some sections that involve scrambling and using ropes. The trek requires a good level of physical fitness, experience at higher altitudes, and strong mental determination. Acclimatization days are crucial to avoid altitude sickness, as trekkers will reach altitudes over 5,000 meters.

  • When is the best time to undertake the Three Passes Trek?

The ideal times for the Mount Everest and the Three Passes Trek are during the pre-monsoon (March to May) and post-monsoon (September to November) seasons. During these months, the weather is generally stable with clear skies and mild temperatures, offering the best trekking conditions. The autumn months are especially popular due to the vibrant colors of the season and fewer chances of rain. Winter (December to February) is colder and more challenging, while the monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rains and should be avoided due to the risk of landslides and poor visibility.

  • What permits are required for the Three Passes Trek?

To trek through the Everest region, you will need the following permits:

    • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: Required for entry into the national park.
    • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit: A necessary permit for trekking in the Khumbu region.
    • Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card: Issued by the Nepal Tourism Board to keep track of trekkers.

These permits can be arranged in Kathmandu or Lukla, and if trekking with a guide or agency, they will typically handle all permit-related matters for you.

  • How long is the Mount Everest and the Three Passes Trek?

The Three Passes Trek typically takes 18 to 21 days, depending on the pace and acclimatization schedule. The trek involves several days of walking through villages like Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche before crossing the first pass, Renjo La. After traversing Cho La and Kongma La, trekkers descend to Everest Base Camp for a momentous visit. This trek includes long days of walking, but ample rest and acclimatization days ensure that the journey remains safe and rewarding.

  • What type of accommodation is available on the trek?

Accommodation on the Three Passes Trek is mostly in teahouses—simple lodges offering twin-sharing rooms with communal dining areas. These teahouses serve traditional Nepali meals, such as dal bhat (lentil soup with rice), as well as Western options like pasta, noodles, and pancakes. While accommodations are basic, the warmth and hospitality of Sherpa hosts provide a comfortable respite after long days of trekking. Higher up in the mountains, the teahouses become more basic, and services may be limited.

  • What gear should I bring for the trek?

For the Mount Everest and the Three Passes Trek, it’s important to pack properly for high-altitude conditions. Essential gear includes sturdy trekking boots, warm layered clothing, a high-quality down jacket, a sleeping bag suitable for cold temperatures, trekking poles, a headlamp, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a first-aid kit. Crampons, a harness, and ice axes are necessary for the sections around the passes. A good camera to capture the incredible landscapes and a water purification system (either tablets or a filter) are also recommended.

  • Do I need a guide and porter for the Three Passes Trek?

While it is not compulsory to hire a guide or porter for the trek, it is highly recommended, especially for the Three Passes Trek due to the challenging terrain. A guide will help you navigate the trail, ensure your safety, and provide cultural insights along the way. A porter can assist with carrying your luggage, making the trek more manageable. Both a guide and porter are valuable assets on such a demanding route, ensuring your journey is both enjoyable and safe.

  • What are the risks of altitude sickness, and how can I prevent it?

Altitude sickness is a significant concern on the Three Passes Trek, as trekkers will reach altitudes over 5,000 meters. To prevent altitude sickness, it’s essential to ascend slowly, take regular acclimatization days, stay well-hydrated, and avoid alcohol. Symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and nausea should not be ignored, and if they worsen, descending to a lower altitude is critical. Being aware of your body’s signals and following an acclimatization schedule will greatly reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

  • What are the highlights of the Three Passes Trek?

The Mount Everest and the Three Passes Trek offers some of the most spectacular views in the world. Highlights include the panoramic vistas from each of the three high passes—Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La—along with breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and other Himalayan giants.
